Is it Possible to Reduce Fat in one Area of the Body?
Have you ever stood in front of a mirror and said something like, “If I could just take the fat from over here and move it up here?” Or even better just lose weight in a specific area of your body?
Oh, if it were only that easy. But unfortunately there is no diet or exercise program that is going to take the fat off of any particular area of your body.
For example, a woman may have a lot of fat stored on her sides above the hips (“love handles”) so she uses side-bend and abdominal side-to-side twisting exercises in an attempt to reduce those fat cells. But performing those exercises may strengthen the muscles responsible for those movements, but they have little impact on reducing the amount of fat stored there.
So, if you’re doing a million sets of crunches and other ab exercises thinking it’s having any direct effect whatsoever on the fat on your stomach… you are completely wasting your time. If anything, all you’re doing is overtraining your abdominal muscles. The fat covering them will remain completely unchanged.
Although I’m not thrilled with this answer, I thank you for posting about it. I was definitely under the false belief that spot reduction was possible and only needed me to spend hundreds of dollars at the gym and a few more at the health food store! Thanks, Kimberley for your frugal advice 🙂
I’m glad that my post has opened your eyes to one of the lies that is out there in the health & fitness world. Thanks for visiting, Lynne!
