Throughout my high school years, I worked in a bakery. David Jeremiah reminded me of this experience when he talked about “a baker’s dozen” in a radio broadcast.
A baker’s dozen refers to the practice of giving 13 donuts to a customer when they order 12. The baker provides one extra donut. Dr. Jeremiah explained that God’s love is similar to this. He offers us blessings that are more than expected. They are overflowing.
Jesus gives a simple example of God’s love:
Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him (Matthew 7:9–11, NIV)!
Chris Tomlin captures the truth of God’s goodness in his song, Good Good Father.
Isn’t it wonderful that, like a baker’s dozen, God’s love is overflowing with goodness.
